The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

The linker merges all the input .sframe sections. When merging, the
linker verifies that all the input .sframe sections have the same
abi/arch.
The linker uses libsframe library to perform key actions on the
.sframe sections - decode, read, and create output data. This
implies buildsystem changes to make and install libsframe before
libbfd.
The linker places the output .sframe section in a new segment of its
own: PT_GNU_SFRAME. A new segment is not added, however, if the
generated .sframe section is empty.
When a section is discarded from the final link, the corresponding
entries in the .sframe section for those functions are also deleted.
The linker sorts the SFrame FDEs on start address by default and sets
the SFRAME_F_FDE_SORTED flag in the .sframe section.
This patch also adds support for generation of SFrame unwind
information for the .plt* sections on x86_64. SFrame unwind info is
generated for IBT enabled PLT, lazy/non-lazy PLT.
The existing linker option --no-ld-generated-unwind-info has been
adapted to include the control of whether .sframe unwind information
will be generated for the linker generated sections like PLT.
Changes to the linker script have been made as necessary.

Currently, the functions checking if the compiler is available or if a
feature is available add both board_cflags and board_ldflags.
However, functions running the tests only retrieve board_cflags. This
can lead to unexpected errors when mandaratory flags are defined in
board_ldflags and not board_cflags.
ld/ChangeLog:
* testsuite/ld-unique/unique.exp: Add board_ldflags when
linking with GCC.
* testsuite/lib/ld-lib.exp: Likewise.

The test for -gctf support in the compiler is used to determine when to
run the ld-ctf tests and most of those in libctf. Unfortunately,
because it uses check_compiler_available and compile_one_cc, it will
fail whenever the compiler emits anything on stderr, even if it
actually does support CTF perfectly well.
So, instead, ask the compiler to emit assembler output and grep it for
references to ".ctf": this is highly unlikely to be present if the
compiler does not support CTF. (This will need adjusting when CTF grows
support for non-ELF platforms that don't dot-prepend their section
names, but right now the linker doesn't link CTF on any such platforms
in any case.)
With this in place we can do things like run all the libctf tests under
leak sanitizers etc even if those spray warnings on simple CTF
compilations, rather than being blocked from doing so just when we would
most like to.
ld/
* testsuite/lib/ld-lib.exp (check_ctf_available): detect CTF
even if a CTF-capable compiler emits warnings.

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

The top level Makefile, the ld Makefile and others, define
CC_FOR_TARGET to be a compiler for the binutils target machine. This
is the compiler that should be used for almost all tests with C
source. There are _FOR_TARGET versions of CFLAGS, CXX, and CXXFLAGS
too. This was all supposed to work with the testsuite .exp files
using CC for the target compiler, and CC_FOR_HOST for the host
compiler, with the makefiles passing CC=$CC_FOR_TARGET and
CC_FOR_HOST=$CC to the runtest invocation.
One exception to the rule of using CC_FOR_TARGET is the native-only ld
bootstrap test, which uses the newly built ld to link a copy of
itself. Since the files being linked were created with the host
compiler, the boostrap test should use CC and CFLAGS, in case some
host compiler option provides needed libraries automatically.
However, bootstrap.exp used CC where it should have used CC_FOR_HOST.
I set about fixing that problem, then decided that playing games in
the makefiles with CC was a bad idea. Not only is it confusing, but
other dejagnu code knows about CC_FOR_TARGET. See dejagnu/target.exp.
So this patch gets rid of the makefile variable renaming and changes
all the .exp files to use the correct _FOR_TARGET variables.
CC_FOR_HOST and CFLAGS_FOR_HOST disappear. A followup patch will
correct bootstrap.exp to use CFLAGS, and a number of other things I
noticed.

The tests currently in binutils are aimed at the original GCC-based
implementation of CTF, which emitted CTF directly from GCC's internal
representation. The approach now under review emits CTF from DWARF,
with an eye to eventually doing this for all non-DWARF debuginfo-like
formats GCC supports. It also uses a different flag to enable
CTF emission (-gctf rather than -gt).
Adjust the testsuite accordingly.
Given that the ld testsuite results are dependent on type ordering,
which we do not guarantee at all, it's amazing how little changes. We
see a few type ordering differences, slices change because the old GCC
was buggy (slices were emitted "backwards", from the wrong end of the
machine word) and its expected results were wrong, and GCC now emits the
underlying integral type for enumerated types, though CTF has no way to
record this yet (coming in v4).
GCC also now emits even hidden symbols into the symtab (and thus
symtypetab), so one symtypetab test changes its expected results
slightly to compensate.
Also add tests for the CTF_K_UNKNOWN nonrepresentable type: this
couldn't be done before now since the only GCC that emits CTF_K_UNKNOWN
for nonrepresentable types is the new one.

When building 32-bit binutils with CC="gcc -m32" CXX="g++ -m32" we can

"unresolved" as a test result means runtest returns an error, which
can be confusing when there is no apparent error unless you look in
.log files. In particular many tests are skipped without reporting an
error if no target C compiler is found, but if a target C compiler is
found but won't compile a testcase for some reason we used to mark the
test as unresolved. Which is no more worthy of an error than when
lacking a C compiler entirely.

PE linker calls _bfd_relocate_contents to resolve relocation, instead of

ERROR should really be reserved for errors in the testsuite framework,
not just normal errors from the tools under test. Removing use of
perror has been suggested before but without action, over concerns
that some test failures might be missed. This patch removes uses of
perror in ld_assemble, ld_compile and ld_nm, and updates numerous
places that ignored the result of these functions by inappropriately
returning an "unresolved" test status. Net result over my large set
of targets look good, in some cases improving the diagnostics, eg:

This patch makes ld accept and ignore -plugin options when configured
with --disable-plugins. The idea is to allow using a linker built
without plugin support with a gcc built with plugin support. Quite
obviously such a combination won't work if using LTO, but gcc has a
habit of passing a bunch of -plugin and -plugin-opt arguments to ld
even when not generating or linking LTO objects.
Why do I want to do this? Well, it lets me and other binutils
developers answer the question as to whether plugin support breaks
binutils in some areas. Which it does for some targets.
* lexsup.c (ld_options): Accept -plugin and -plugin-opt when
!ENABLE_PLUGINS.

GCC LTO wrapper is needed to extract real symbols from LTO IR objects.
This patch does the following:
1. Set up GCC LTO wrapper for each LTO IR object.
2. Run GCC LTO wrapper to get the real object.
3. Extract symbol info from the real object.
4. Cleanup afterwards.

With the addition of section16 tests we have multiple tests

The ld testsuite includes numerous tests that depend on being able to
compile and link programs with the C compiler. Some of these tests
use [which $CC] to check for the presence of the compiler before
proceeding with the test, but run_ld_link_exec_tests and run_cc_link_tests
give ERRORs if compilation fails. Also, even if $CC is defined and present,
it may not be usable due to missing libraries, etc.
This patch adds a new procedure check_compiler_available that attempts
to build an empty program and caches the result. Uses of [which $CC]
are replaced with calls to this procedure, and run_ld_link_exec_tests
and run_cc_link_tests now also guard attempts to use $CC.

run_dump_test proposes an ld action but when trying to make use of it in
a gas test it gave me some Tcl error. It turns out that it references
the check_shared_lib_support procedure and ld_elf_shared_opt variable
both only available in ld-lib.exp. I've thus moved the procedure in
binutils-common.exp and defined the variable needed in the various
default.exp of testsuite that seem to be using run_dump_test.
Since check_shared_lib_support itself references the ld variable not
defined in binutils-common I've defined it from LD in run_dump_test and
fixed LD and LDFLAGS to be defined as expected by run_dump_test in the
various default.exp of testsuite using run_dump_test.

This merges the three versions of run_dump_test. Improved warning
handling versus the old gas version shows up a number of tests that
need their disassembly updating:
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: ARM v1 instructions
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: Accepted v8-a with ARMv8.1 AdvSIMD.
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: bl local instructions for v4t.
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: UDF

h8300-elf +FAIL: binutils-all/strip-14
h8300-elf +FAIL: binutils-all/strip-15

We have three copies of run_dump_test in the testsuite. This is a first
step towards consolidating them.
A few tests use objcopy to convert to verilog or srec output, then
check that output is as expected. Those tests can just as easily use
objdump, keeping the set of dump programs (addr2line, nm, objdump,
readelf, size) separate from utilities under test. That in turn makes
auto-detecting the dump program possible in more places.

When -z separate-code, which is enabled by default for Linux/x86, is
used to create executable, ld won't place any data in the code-only
PT_LOAD segment. If there are no data sections placed before the
code-only PT_LOAD segment, the program headers won't be mapped into
any PT_LOAD segment. When the executable tries to access it (based
on the program header address passed in AT_PHDR), it will lead to
segfault. This patch inserts a GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED note if
there may be no data sections before the text section so that the
first PT_LOAD segment won't be code-only and will contain the program
header.
Testcases are adjusted to either pass "-z noseparate-code" to ld or
discard the .note.gnu.property section. A Linux/x86 run-time test is
added.

Bring the LD implementation of `run_dump_test' in line with its binutils
and GAS counterparts and report the UNSUPPORTED status for tests the run
of which has been prevented by means of one or more of `target',
`alltargets' and `notarget' tags. Define `skip', `anyskip' and `noskip'
tags, which do not report anything for tests that are not run.
The rationale behind this is that we want to have unsupported tests
reported to ensure that they have actually been attempted and have not
been accidentally suppressed. Then tests which have target-specific
variants that cannot be expressed with a single .d file can make use of
the newly added tags to silently suppress the uninteresting variants.
ld/
* testsuite/lib/ld-lib.exp (run_dump_test): Call `unsupported'
if the target being tested has been excluded by means of one or
more of `target', `alltargets' and `notarget' tags. Add support
for `skip', `anyskip' and `noskip' tags.

Bring the LD implementation of `run_dump_test' in line with its binutils

Implement a more complex way of selecting targets to include or exclude
with `run_dump_test' cases, by extending the syntax for the `target',
`not-target', `skip' and `not-skip' options (with the binutils and GAS
test suites) and the `target', `alltargets' and `notarget' options (with
the LD test suite) to also accept a name of a TCL procedure instead of a
target triplet glob matching expression. The result, 1 or 0, of the
procedure determines whether the test is to be run or not. This mimics
and expands `dg-require-effective-target' from the GCC test suite.
Names of TCL procedures are supplied in square brackets `[]' as with TCL
procedure calls, observing that target triplet glob matching expressions
do not normally start and end with matching square brackets both at a
time. Arguments for procedures are allowed if required.
Having a way to specify a complex condition for a `run_dump_test' case
to run has the advantage of keeping it local within the test case itself
where tool options related to the check might be also present, removing
the need to wrap `run_dump_test' calls into an `if' block whose only
reason is to do a feature check, and ultimately lets one have the test
reported as UNSUPPORTED automagically if required (not currently
supported by the `run_dump_test' options used for LD).

* testsuite/lib/binutils-common.exp (match_target): New procedure.

gcc configured using --with-ld always uses that particular version of
ld if it exists. This patch adds a check that the ld version reported
directly from ld-new matches that reported via gcc. I chose to
compare the ld --version output rather than a more strict test (for
example by gcc --print-prog-name=ld), because the version test allows
a user to run the ld testsuite after installing a new ld (in the place
expected by gcc).
