Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

This removes the exec_bfd macro, in favor of new accessors on
program_space. In one spot the accessor can't be used; but this is
still a big improvement over the macro, IMO.

This removes the object-like macro target_has_execution, replacing it
with a function call. target_has_execution_current is also now
handled by this function.

Replace all uses of it by type::field.
Note that since type::field returns a reference to the field, some spots
are used to assign the whole field structure. See ctfread.c, function
attach_fields_to_type, for example. This is the same as was happening
with the macro, so I don't think it's a problem, but if anybody sees a
really nicer way to do this, now could be a good time to implement it.

I think that in the future, we should consider making the interface of
`struct type` better. For example, right now it's possible for the
number of fields property and the actual number of fields set to be out
of sync. However, I want to keep the existing behavior in this patch,
just translate from macros to methods.

There were some Windows timeouts after the last merge. Debugging
showed that these were caused by an infinite loop in
is_linked_with_cygwin_dll when reading C:\Windows\SysWOW64\win32u.dll.
This patch fixes the problem by ensuring that the loop always makes
progress.

called from windows-nat.c. Sorry about the breakage.

Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.
Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.
In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:
- printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));
This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.
This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

When a warning is displayed, it isn't clear to the user which file is
the cause of the warning. Add the filename in there. Remove the
"Failed to parse .idata section" part, since the .idata section is
always mentioned one way or another anyway, so it just contributes to
make the message longer than it needs to be.

.idata section
When loading the file C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msvcrt.dll, taken from a
Windows 10 system, into GDB, we get the following warning:
warning: Failed to parse .idata section: name's virtual address (0x0) is outside .idata section's range [0xb82b8, 0xb97f0[.
This uncovers an issue with how we parse the import table, part of the
.idata section. Right now, we assume that the import table is located
at the beginning of the section. That was the case in everything I had
tried so far, but this file is an example where that's not true.
We need to compute the offset of the import table within the .idata
section, and start there, instead of at the beginning of the .idata
section. Using the file mentioned above, this is the values we have to
work with:
A) bfd_section_vma (idata_section) 101b8000
B) Import table's virtual address b82b8
C) Image base 10100000
The virtual address that BFD returns us for the section has the image
base applied, so we need to subtract it first. The offset of the table
in the section is therefore:
B - (A - C)
This patch implements that.

The signal enumeration in windows-tdep.c is defined differently whether
it is compiled on Cygwin or not. This is problematic, since the code in
tdep files is not supposed to be influenced by the host platform (the
platform GDB itself runs on).
This makes a difference in windows_gdb_signal_to_target. An obvious
example of clash is SIGABRT. Let's pretend we are cross-debugging a
Cygwin process from a MinGW (non-Cygwin Windows) GDB. If GDB needs to
translate the gdb signal number GDB_SIGNAL_ABRT into a target
equivalent, it would obtain the MinGW number (22), despite the target
being a Cygwin process. Conversely, if debugging a MinGW process from a
Cygwin-hosted GDB, GDB_SIGNAL_ABRT would be converted to a Cygwin signal
number (6) despite the target being a MinGW process. This is wrong,
since we want the result to depend on the target's platform, not GDB's
platform.
This known flaw was accepted because at the time we had a single OS ABI
(called Cygwin) for all Windows binaries (Cygwin ones and non-Cygwin
ones). This limitation is now lifted, as we now have separate Windows
and Cygwin OS ABIs. This means we are able to detect at runtime whether
the binary we are debugging is a Cygwin one or non-Cygwin one.
This patch splits the signal enum in two, one for the MinGW flavors and
one for Cygwin, removing all the ifdefs that made it depend on the host
platform. It then makes two separate gdb_signal_to_target gdbarch
methods, that are used according to the OS ABI selected at runtime.
There is a bit of re-shuffling needed in how the gdbarch'es are
initialized, but nothing major.

is_linked_with_cygwin_dll
The function is_linked_with_cygwin_dll currently uses
gdb_bfd_map_section to get some section contents. This is not ideal
because that memory, which is only used in this function, can't be
released. Instead, it was suggested to use
bfd_get_full_section_contents.
However, bfd_get_full_section_contents returns a newly allocated buffer,
which is not very practical to use with C++ automatic memory management
constructs. I decided to make gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents, a
small alternative to bfd_get_full_section_contents. It is a small
wrapper around bfd_get_section_contents which returns the full contents
of the section in a gdb::byte_vector.
gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents could be used at many places that
already allocate a vector of the size of the section and then call
bfd_get_section_contents. I think these call sites can be updated over
time.

Before this patch, the "Windows" OS ABI is selected for all Windows
executables, including Cygwin ones. This patch makes GDB differentiate
Cygwin binaries from non-Cygwin ones, and selects the "Cygwin" OS ABI
for the Cygwin ones.
To check whether a Windows PE executable is a Cygwin one, we check the
library list in the .idata section, see if it contains "cygwin1.dll".
I had to add code to parse the .idata section, because BFD doesn't seem
to expose this information. BFD does parse this information, but only
to print it in textual form (function pe_print_idata):

The target_get_tib_address call always fails in this case, and there is an
error when changing the program with the file command:
(gdb) file allocer64.exe
Reading symbols from allocer64.exe...
You can't do that when your target is `exec'
Now it will skip this part, there is no need to rebase the executable without
an inferior anyways.

Windows executables linked with -dynamicbase get a new base address
when loaded, which makes debugging impossible if the executable isn't
also rebased in gdb.
The new base address is read from the Process Environment Block.

Each time a dll is loaded, update_solib_list is called.
This in turn calls deep down xfer_partial -> windows_xfer_shared_libraries,
which calls windows_xfer_shared_library for each loaded dll,
and pe_text_section_offset reads the dll for the text section offset.
Also if the data provided by xfer_partial is bigger than 4K,
then all of this is done for each 4K chunk (see target_read_alloc_1).
Caching of the text section offset improves the startup time of
an application with >300 dynamically loaded plugins from 2m10s to 10s.
And the shutdown time improves from 2m to 2s.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

When a Windows program is terminated by a fatal exception, its exit
code is the value of that exception, as defined by the various
EXCEPTION_* symbols in the Windows API headers. This commit emulates
WTERMSIG etc. by translating the fatal exception codes to more-or-less
equivalent Posix signals.

Currently the target pid_to_str method returns a const char *, so many
implementations have a static buffer that they update. This patch
changes these methods to return a std::string instead. I think this
is cleaner and avoids possible gotchas when calling pid_to_str on
different ptids in a single statement. (Though no such calls exist
currently.)
This also updates various helper functions, and the gdbarch pid_to_str
methods.
I also made a best effort to fix all the callers, but I can't build
some of the *-nat.c files.
Tested by the buildbot.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header

"target_stack" pointer. I had picked the "target_stack" name very
early in the multi-target work, and managed to stick with it, even
though it's a bit of a misnomer, since it isn't really a "target
stack" object, but a pointer into the current top target in the stack.
As I'm splitting more pieces off of the multi-target branch, I've come
to think that it's better to rename it now. A following patch will
introduce a new class to represent a target stack, and "target_stack"
would be _its_ ideal name. (In the branch, the class is called
a_target_stack to work around the clash.)
Thus this commit renames target_stack to current_top_target and
replaces all references throughout. Also, while at it,
current_top_target is made a function instead of a pointer, to make it
possible to change its internal implementation without leaking
implementation details out. In a couple patches, the implementation
of the function will change to refer to a target stack object, and
then further down the multi-target work, it'll change again to find
the right target stack for the current inferior.

I.e., use C++ virtual methods and inheritance instead of tables of
function pointers.
Unfortunately, there's no way to do a smooth transition. ALL native
targets in the tree must be converted at the same time. I've tested
all I could with cross compilers and with help from GCC compile farm,
but naturally I haven't been able to test many of the ports. Still, I
made a best effort to port everything over, and while I expect some
build problems due to typos and such, which should be trivial to fix,
I don't expect any design problems.
* Implementation notes:
- The flattened current_target is gone. References to current_target
or current_target.beneath are replaced with references to
target_stack (the top of the stack) directly.
- To keep "set debug target" working, this adds a new debug_stratum
layer that sits on top of the stack, prints the debug, and delegates
to the target beneath.
In addition, this makes the shortname and longname properties of
target_ops be virtual methods instead of data fields, and makes the
debug target defer those to the target beneath. This is so that
debug code sprinkled around that does "if (debugtarget) ..." can
transparently print the name of the target beneath.
A patch later in the series actually splits out the
shortname/longname methods to a separate structure, but I preferred
to keep that chance separate as it is associated with changing a bit
the design of how targets are registered and open.
- Since you can't check whether a C++ virtual method is overridden,
the old method of checking whether a target_ops implements a method
by comparing the function pointer must be replaced with something
else.
Some cases are fixed by adding a parallel "can_do_foo" target_ops
methods. E.g.,:

Others are fixed by changing void return type to bool or int return
type, and have the default implementation return false or -1, to
indicate lack of support.
- make-target-delegates was adjusted to generate C++ classes and
methods.
It needed tweaks to grok "virtual" in front of the target method
name, and for the fact that methods are no longer function pointers.
(In particular, the current code parsing the return type was simple
because it could simply parse up until the '(' in '(*to_foo)'.
It now generates a couple C++ classes that inherit target_ops:
dummy_target and debug_target.
Since we need to generate the class declarations as well, i.e., we
need to emit methods twice, we now generate the code in two passes.
- The core_target global is renamed to avoid conflict with the
"core_target" class.
- ctf/tfile targets
init_tracefile_ops is replaced by a base class that is inherited by
both ctf and tfile.
- bsd-uthread
The bsd_uthread_ops_hack hack is gone. It's not needed because
nothing was extending a target created by bsd_uthread_target.
- remote/extended-remote targets
This is a first pass, just enough to C++ify target_ops.
A later pass will convert more free functions to methods, and make
remote_state be truly per remote instance, allowing multiple
simultaneous instances of remote targets.
- inf-child/"native" is converted to an actual base class
(inf_child_target), that is inherited by all native targets.
- GNU/Linux
The old weird double-target linux_ops mechanism in linux-nat.c, is
gone, replaced by adding a few virtual methods to linux-nat.h's
target_ops, called low_XXX, that the concrete linux-nat
implementations override. Sort of like gdbserver's
linux_target_ops, but simpler, for requiring only one
target_ops-like hierarchy, which spares implementing the same method
twice when we need to forward the method to a low implementation.
The low target simply reimplements the target_ops method directly in
that case.
There are a few remaining linux-nat.c hooks that would be better
converted to low_ methods like above too. E.g.:

- We can no longer use functions like x86_use_watchpoints to install
custom methods on an arbitrary base target.
The patch replaces instances of such a pattern with template mixins.
For example memory_breakpoint_target defined in target.h, or
x86_nat_target in x86-nat.h.
- linux_trad_target, MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux
The code in the new linux-nat-trad.h/c files which was split off of
inf-ptrace.h/c recently, is converted to a C++ base class, and used
by the MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux ports.
- BSD targets
The
$architecture x NetBSD/OpenBSD/FreeBSD
support matrix complicates things a bit. There's common BSD target
code, and there's common architecture-specific code shared between
the different BSDs. Currently, all that is stiched together to form
a final target, via the i386bsd_target, x86bsd_target,
fbsd_nat_add_target functions etc.
This introduces new fbsd_nat_target, obsd_nat_target and
nbsd_nat_target classes that serve as base/prototype target for the
corresponding BSD variant.
And introduces generic i386/AMD64 BSD targets, to be used as
template mixin to build a final target. Similarly, a generic SPARC
target is added, used by both BSD and Linux ports.
- bsd_kvm_add_target, BSD libkvm target
I considered making bsd_kvm_supply_pcb a virtual method, and then
have each port inherit bsd_kvm_target and override that method, but
that was resulting in lots of unjustified churn, so I left the
function pointer mechanism alone.

This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.
In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.
This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.
Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build. So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.
Tested by rebuilding.

This changes the interfaces to init_type and arch_type to take the
type length in bits as input (instead of as bytes). The routines
assert that the length is a multiple of TARGET_CHAR_BIT.
For consistency, arch_flags_type is changed likewise, so that now
all type creation interfaces always use length in bits.
All callers are updated in the straightforward manner.
The assert actually found a bug in read_range_type, where the
init_integer_type routine was called with a wrong argument (probably
a bug introduced with the conversion to use init_integer_type).

GDB is currently not aware that wchar_t is a built-in type in C++
mode. This is usually not a problem because the debug info describes
the type, so when you have a program loaded, you don't notice this.
However, if you try expressions involving wchar_t before a program is
loaded, gdb errors out:
(gdb) p (wchar_t)-1
No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command.
(gdb) p L"hello"
No type named wchar_t.
(gdb) ptype L"hello"
No type named wchar_t.
This commit teaches gdb about the type. After:
(gdb) p (wchar_t)-1
$1 = -1 L'\xffffffff'
(gdb) p L"hello"
$2 = L"hello"
(gdb) ptype L"hello"
type = wchar_t [6]
Unlike char16_t/char32_t, unfortunately, the underlying type of
wchar_t is implementation dependent, both size and signness. So this
requires adding a couple new gdbarch hooks.
I grepped the GCC code base for WCHAR_TYPE and WCHAR_TYPE_SIZE, and it
seems to me that the majority of the ABIs have a 4-byte signed
wchar_t, so that's what I made the default for GDB too. And then I
looked for which ports have a 16-bit and/or unsigned wchar_t, and made
GDB follow suit.
