2024-01-12Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBAndrew Burgess9-9/+9
This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

A regression in gdb.xml/maint_print_struct.exp was introduced with commit: commit 81b86eced24f905545b58aa6c27478104c364976 Date: Fri Jan 6 09:30:40 2023 -0700 Do not record a rejected target description The test relied on an invalid target description being stored within the tdesc_info of the current inferior, the above commit stopped this behaviour. 2022-11-28gdb/testsuite: remove use of then keyword from gdb.*/*.exp scriptsAndrew Burgess1-2/+2
The canonical form of 'if' in modern TCL is 'if {} {}'. But there's still a bunch of places in the testsuite where we make use of the 'then' keyword, and sometimes these get copies into new tests, which just spreads poor practice. This commit removes all use of the 'then' keyword from the remaining gdb.*/*.exp scripts. Previous commits have done the bulk of this removal, this commit just handles the remaining directories that each contain a low number of instances. There should be no changes in what is tested after this commit.

This teaches gdb_test to forward the -prompt and -lbl options to gdb_test_multiple. The option parsing is done with parse_args. As a cleanup, instead of using llength and lindex to get at the positional arguments, use lassign, and check whether the corresponding variable is empty. Convert gdb.base/ui-redirect.exp and gdb.xml/tdesc-reload.exp to use gdb_test -prompt/-lbl instead of gdb_test_multiple as examples. Change-Id: I243e1296d32c05a421ccef30b63d43a89eaeb4a0

2021-09-30gdb/testsuite: make runto_main not pass no-message to runtoSimon Marchi1-2/+0
As follow-up to this discussion: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2020-August/171385.html ... make runto_main not pass no-message to runto. This means that if we fail to run to main, for some reason, we'll emit a FAIL. This is the behavior we want the majority of (if not all) the time. Without this, we rely on tests logging a failure if runto_main fails, otherwise. They do so in a very inconsisteny mannet, sometimes using "fail", "unsupported" or "untested". The messages also vary widly. This patch removes all these messages as well. Also, remove a few "fail" where we call runto (and not runto_main). by default (without an explicit no-message argument), runto prints a failure already. In two places, gdb.multi/multi-re-run.exp and gdb.python/py-pp-registration.exp, remove "message" passed to runto. This removes a few PASSes that we don't care about (but FAILs will still be printed if we fail to run to where we want to). This aligns their behavior with the rest of the testsuite. For aarch64, the "info all-registers" output is very verbose. If you run this test using read1, it will timeout before the command output is done being read. Currently when printing an XML description GDB prints enum values like this: <enum id="levels_type" size="4"> <field name="low" start="0"/> <field name="high" start="1"/> </enum> This is incorrect, and is most likely a copy and paste error with the struct and flags printing code. The correct syntax is: <enum id="levels_type" size="4"> <evalue name="low" value="0"/> <evalue name="high" value="1"/> </enum> A test is included to cover this functionality. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.xml/maint-xml-dump-03.xml: New file. gdbsupport/ChangeLog: * tdesc.cc (print_xml_feature::visit): Print enum fields using 'evalue' syntax.

2020-06-23gdb: New maintenance command to print XML target descriptionAndrew Burgess5-0/+266
This commit adds a new maintenance command that dumps the current target description as an XML document. This is a maintenance command as I currently only see this being useful for GDB developers, or for people debugging a new remote target. By default the command will print whatever the current target description is, whether this was delivered by the remote, loaded by the user from a file, or if it is a built in target within GDB. The command can also take an optional filename argument. In this case GDB loads a target description from the file, and then reprints it. This could be useful for testing GDB's parsing of target descriptions, or to check that GDB can successfully parse a particular XML description. It is worth noting that the XML description printed will not be an exact copy of the document fed into GDB. For example this minimal input file: <target> <feature name="abc"> <reg name="r1" bitsize="32"/> </feature> </target> Will produce this output: (gdb) maint print xml-tdesc path/to/file.xml <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE target SYSTEM "gdb-target.dtd"> <target> <feature name="abc"> <reg name="r1" bitsize="32" type="int" regnum="0"/> </feature> </target> Notice that GDB filled in both the 'type' and 'regnum' fields of the <reg>. I think this is actually a positive as it means we get to really understand how GDB processed the document, if GDB made some assumptions that differ to those the user expected then hopefully this will bring those issues to the users attention. To implement this I have tweaked the output produced by the print_xml_feature which is defined within the gdbsupport/ directory. The changes I have made to this class are: 1. The <architecture>...</architecture> tags are now not produced if the architecture name is NULL. 2. The <osabi>...</osabi> tags get a newline at the end. 3. And, the whole XML document is indented using white space in a nested fashion (as in the example output above). I think that these changes should be fine, the print_xml_feature class is used: 1. In gdbserver to generate an XML document to send as the target description to GDB. 2. In GDB as part of a self-check function, a target_desc is converted to XML then parsed back into a target_desc. We then check the before and after target_desc objects are the same. 3. In the new 'maint print xml-tdesc' command. 2019-12-19Handle CRLF when reading XML on WindowsTom Tromey1-3/+11
xml-support.c uses FOPEN_RT, but then reads the entire contents of the file and verifies that the number of bytes read matches the length. This can fail on Windows, where the read will translate line terminators. This patch fixes the bug by changing xml-support.c to use FOPEN_RB. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-06-01Remove TYPE_TAG_NAMETom Tromey1-2/+2
TYPE_TAG_NAME has been an occasional source of confusion and bugs. It seems to me that it is only useful for C and C++ -- but even there, not so much, because at least with DWARF there doesn't seem to be any way to wind up with a type where the name and the tag name are both non-NULL and different. So, this patch removes TYPE_TAG_NAME entirely. This should save a little memory, but more importantly, it simplifies this part of gdb. A few minor test suite adjustments were needed. When running tests in parallel, each test puts its generated files in a different directory, under "outputs". I think it would be nice if it was always the case, as it would isolate the test cases a bit more. An artifact created by a test wouldn't get overwritten by another test. Also, it makes it easier to clean up. A lot of executables are left all over the place because their names do not appear in gdb.*/Makefile. If everything is in "outputs", then we just have to delete that directory (which we already do). At the same time it makes the gdb.foo directories and their Makefiles useless in the build directory, since they are pretty much only used for cleaning. Nowadays, if we do in-tree build and run tests sequentially, some source files are removed, due to the following pattern: set pi_txt [gdb_remote_download host ${srcdir}/${subdir}/pi.txt] remote_exec host "rm -f $pi_txt" If testing is run sequentially, file ${srcdir}/${subdir}/pi.txt is copied to ${objdir}/${subdir}/pi.txt. However, ${objdir} is ${srcdir} in the in-tree build/test, so the file is coped to itself, as a nop. As a result, the file in source is removed at the end of test. This patch fixes this problem by not removing files copied to host in each test.
