2022-04-21gdb: fix 'remote show FOO-packet' aliasesAndrew Burgess1-0/+5
The following behaviour was observed in GDB: (gdb) show remote X-packet Support for the `p' packet is auto-detected, currently unknown. Note the message mentions the 'p' packet. This is a regression since this commit: commit 8579fd136a614985bd27f20539c7bb7c5a51287d Date: Mon Nov 8 14:58:46 2021 +0000 gdb/gdbsupport: make xstrprintf and xstrvprintf return a unique_ptr Before this commit the behaviour was: (gdb) show remote X-packet Support for the `X' packet is auto-detected, currently unknown. The problem was caused by a failed attempt to ensure that some allocated strings were deleted when GDB exits. The code in the above commit attempted to make use of 'static' to solve this problem, however, the solution was just wrong. In this new commit I instead allocate a static vector into which all the allocated strings are stored, this ensures the strings are released when GDB exits (which makes output from tools like valgrind cleaner), but each string within the vector can be unique, which fixes the regression.

2021-09-30gdb/testsuite: make runto_main not pass no-message to runtoSimon Marchi1-1/+0
As follow-up to this discussion: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2020-August/171385.html ... make runto_main not pass no-message to runto. This means that if we fail to run to main, for some reason, we'll emit a FAIL. This is the behavior we want the majority of (if not all) the time. Without this, we rely on tests logging a failure if runto_main fails, otherwise. They do so in a very inconsisteny mannet, sometimes using "fail", "unsupported" or "untested". The messages also vary widly. This patch removes all these messages as well. Also, remove a few "fail" where we call runto (and not runto_main). by default (without an explicit no-message argument), runto prints a failure already. In two places, gdb.multi/multi-re-run.exp and gdb.python/py-pp-registration.exp, remove "message" passed to runto. This removes a few PASSes that we don't care about (but FAILs will still be printed if we fail to run to where we want to). This aligns their behavior with the rest of the testsuite. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-05-22Fix gdb.base/remote.exp with native-extended-gdbserver boardPedro Alves1-2/+7
This fixes gdb.base/remote.exp regressions caused by the previous commit to the testcase, when tested with --target_board=native-extended-gdbserver. For example: ... show remote memory-write-packet-size The memory-write-packet-size is 0 (default). Packets are limited to 16383 bytes. (gdb) FAIL: gdb.base/remote.exp: write-packet default ... With that board, GDB connects to GDBserver at gdb_start time, so GDB is showing the actual remote/gdbserver packet size limits. Fix it using the usual "disconnect" pattern. While at it, there's no need to start GDB before compiling the testcase. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: 2018-05-22 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * gdb.base/remote.exp: Only gdb_start after compiling the testcase. 2018-05-22Handle "show remote memory-write-packet-size" when not connectedPedro Alves1-3/+27
Currently "show remote memory-write-packet-size" says that the packet size is limited to whatever is stored in the remote_state global, even if not connected to a target. When we get to support multiple instances of remote targets, there won't be a remote_state global anymore, so that must be replaced by something else. Since it doesn't make sense to print the limit of the packet size of a non-existing connection, this patch makes us say that the limit will be further reduced when we connect. The text is taken from the command's online help, which says: "The actual limit is further reduced dependent on the target." Note that a value of "0" is special, as per "help set remote memory-write-packet-size": ~~~ Specify the number of bytes in a packet or 0 (zero) for the default packet size. ~~~ I've tweaked "show remote memory-write-packet-size" to include "(default)" in the output in that case, like this: (gdb) show remote memory-write-packet-size The memory-write-packet-size is 0 (default). The actual limit will be further reduced dependent on the target. While working on this, I noticed that an explicit "set remote write-packet-size 0" does not makes GDB go back to the exact same state as the default state when GDB starts up: (gdb) show remote memory-write-packet-size The memory-write-packet-size is 0. [...] ^^ (gdb) set remote memory-write-packet-size 0 (gdb) show remote memory-write-packet-size The memory-write-packet-size is 16384. [...] ^^^^^ The "16384" number comes from DEFAULT_MAX_MEMORY_PACKET_SIZE. This happens because git commit a5c0808e221c ("gdb: remove packet size limit") at <https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-08/msg00743.html>, added this: /* So that the query shows the correct value. */ if (size <= 0) size = DEFAULT_MAX_MEMORY_PACKET_SIZE; to set_memory_packet_size, but despite what the comment suggests, that also has the side-effect of recording DEFAULT_MAX_MEMORY_PACKET_SIZE in config->size. Finally, DEFAULT_MAX_MEMORY_PACKET_SIZE only makes sense for "set remote memory-write-packet-size fixed", so I've renamed it accordingly, to make it a little bit clearer. gdb/ChangeLog: 2018-05-22 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * remote.c (DEFAULT_MAX_MEMORY_PACKET_SIZE): Rename to ... The following patch is based on the previous patch i sent and handles cases of test names that start with an uppercase letter. Test names should start with lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA etc. This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail, kfail, kpass, commands) This is a regression from 7.5, introduced/exposed by: http://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2012-07/msg00259.html There are a series of issues with this code. It does: unsigned int val = parse_and_eval_long (arg); ^^^^^^^^^^^^ (unsigned, usually 32-bit) while parse_and_eval_long returns a LONGEST (usually 64-bit), so we lose precision without noticing: (gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000 (gdb) show remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000 The maximum number of target hardware watchpoints is 0. While at it, print the invalid number with plongest, so the user sees what GDB thought the number was: (gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 0x100000000 integer 4294967296 out of range So with "set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit -1", val ends converted to 0xffffffff, which then fails the else if (val >= INT_MAX) error (_("integer %u out of range"), val); test. Looking at that INT_MAX check, we forbid INT_MAX itself, but we shouldn't, as that does fit in 'int' -- we want to forbid values _greater_ than INT_MAX (and less than INT_MIN, while at it): (gdb) set remote hardware-watchpoint-limit 2147483647 integer 2147483647 out of range The same problem is in the new var_zuinteger_unlimited code, which also uses "int" for variable. Also, when printing a 'signed int', we should use %d, not %u. This adds a couple regression tests. Not completely thorough in checking all kinds of invalid input; I'm saving more exaustive testing around zXXinteger commands for something like new test-assisting commands like "maint test cmd-zinteger -1", where testing would focus on the command types, and thus be independent of particular user commands of particular GDB features.
