Add a getter and a setter for a symtab's compunit_symtab. Remove the
corresponding macro and adjust all callers.
For brevity, I chose the name "compunit" instead of "compunit_symtab"
the the field, getter and setter names. Since we are already in symtab
context, the _symtab suffix seems redundant.

Make compunit_filetabs, used to iterate a compunit_symtab's filetabs, a
method of compunit_symtab. The name filetabs conflicts with the current
name of the field. Rename the field to m_filetabs, since at this point
nothing outside of compunit_symtab uses it, so we should treat it as
private (even though it's not actually private). Rename the
last_filetab field to m_last_filetab as well (it's only used on
compunit_symtab::add_filetab).
Adjust the COMPUNIT_FILETABS macro to keep its current behavior of
returning the first filetab.

This changes all existing calls to wrap_here to call the method on the
appropriate ui_file instead. The choice of ui_file is determined by
context.

I think it only really makes sense to call wrap_here with an argument
consisting solely of spaces. Given this, it seemed better to me that
the argument be an int, rather than a string. This patch is the
result. Much of it was written by a script.

I happened to notice that one "show" callback was printing to
gdb_stdout rather than to the passed-in ui_file parameter. I went
through all such callbacks and fixed them to consistently use the
ui_file.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 34.

I found some uses of xfree in the path substitution code in source.c.
C++-ifying struct substitute_path_rule both simplifies the code and
removes manual memory management.

This removes a temporary \0 assignment and an xfree from add_path,
replacing it with a simpler use of std::string.

String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename,
var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage
variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to
"mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage.
An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often
easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any
manual memory management.
Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty
string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings
are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing
"set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to
an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup,
but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This
leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value".
Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when
getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it
is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least
know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of
representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string.
I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be
important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever
happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use
optional<string> anyway.
Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in
init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp. init_history
sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that
the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If
history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly
cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this
distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code
that chooses a good default value for history_filename to
_initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an
-ex command can then clear that value if needed (what
gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests).
Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily
give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global
variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function.
In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we
allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in
Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects.
This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to
take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything
that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting
variable and their uses.
string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a
connection between options and settings (see
add_setshow_cmds_for_options).
The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd
rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now.
Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *`
and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path
at all, so I think it is acceptable.

Make gdb_open_cloexec return a scoped_fd, to encourage using automatic
management of the file descriptor closing. Except in the most trivial
cases, I changed the callers to just release the fd, which retains their
existing behavior. That will allow the transition to using scoped_fd
more to go gradually, one caller at a time.

In some situations it is possible that a user might not want GDB to
try and access source code files, for example, the source code might
be stored on a slow to access network file system.
It is almost certainly possible that using some combination of 'set
directories' and/or 'set substitute-path' a user can trick GDB into
being unable to find the source files, but this feels like a rather
crude way to solve the problem.
In this commit a new option is add that stops GDB from opening and
reading the source files. A user can run with source code reading
disabled if this is required, then re-enable later if they decide
that they now want to view the source code.

The final bug fix in this series would duplicate the logic in
psymtab_to_fullname, so this patch extracts the body of this function
into a new function.

I spotted some indentation issues where we had some spaces followed by
tabs at beginning of line, that I wanted to fix. So while at it, I did
a quick grep to find and fix all I could find.

The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the
target command. They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup
the target command by name.
Given that:
- We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command
exists.
- We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command,
and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element.
... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a
cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches). This
ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you
need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias
creation function. And it avoids an unecessary command lookup. So it
seems better to me in every aspect.

Address sanitizer pointed out a buglet in source.c:add_path.
In this test, from gdb.base/source-dir.exp:
(gdb) set directories :/foo:/bar
... 'p[-1]' will result in a buffer underflow.
This patch fixes the bug by introducing a new check.

This introduces wrappers for each function in quick_symbol_functions.
The wrappers are methods on objfile, and are defined in
symfile-debug.c, so that they can use the symfile_debug variable.
Places that call the quick functions are all updated to call these new
wrapper methods.

As reported in gdb/27393, the 'directory' and 'set directories' commands
fail when parsing an empty dir name:

This patch fixes this issue by ignoring any attempt to add an empty

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

When setting a breakpoint on a line in an executable without debug line info,
we run into an abort.
The problem occurs when calling set_default_source_symtab_and_line, which
calls select_source_symtab (0), which is where we try to find the line number
for main:

Fix this by handling sal.symtab == NULL in select_source_symtab.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

Having taken time to reflect on the discussion, and reading the
documentation again I believe we should revert GDB's behaviour back to
how it used to be.
The original concern that triggered the initial patch was that when
annotations were on the current source and line were updated (inside
the annotation code), while when annotations are off this update would
not occur. This was incorrect, as printing the source with the call
to print_source_lines does also update the current source and line.
Further, the documentation here:

Clearly states:
"The following annotation is used instead of displaying source code:
^Z^Zsource filename:line:character:middle:addr
..."
So it is documented that the 'source' annotation is a replacement for,
and not in addition to, actually printing the source lie.
There are still a few issues that I can see, these are:
1. In source.c:info_line_command, when annotations are on we call
annotate_source_line, however, if annotations are off then there is
no corresponding call to print the source line. This means that a
if a user uses 'info line ...' with annotations on, and then does a
'list', they will get different results than if they had done this
with annotations off.
2. It bothers me that the call to annotate_source_line returns a
boolean, and that this controls a call to print_source_line (in
stack.c:print_frame_info).
The reason for this is that the source line annotation will only
print something if the file is found, and the line number is in
range for the file.
It seems to me like an annotation should always be printed, either
one that identifies the file and line, or one that identifies the
file and line GDB would like to access, but couldn't.
I considered changing this, but in the end decided not too, if I
extend the existing 'source' annotation to print something in all
cases then I risk breaking existing UIs that rely on the file and
line always being valid. If I add a new annotation then this might
also break existing UIs that rely on GDB itself printing the error
from within print_source_line.
Given that annotations is deprecated (as I understand it) mechanism
for UIs to interact with GDB (in favour of MI) I figure we should just
restore the old behaviour, and leave the mini-bugs in until someone
actually complains.
This isn't a straight revert of the two commits mentioned above. I've
left annotate_source_line instead of going back to the original
identify_source_line, which lived in source.c, but was really
annotation related. The API for setting the current source and line
has changed since the original patches, so I updated for that change
too. Finally I wrote the code in stack.c so that we avoided an extra
level of indentation, which I felt made things easier to read.

This removes the ALL_PSPACES macro. In this case it seemed cleanest
to change how program spaces are stored -- instead of using a linked
list, they are now stored in a std::vector.

This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.
To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading. Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds. Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

This error is caused by an abort during the computation of srcpath
when SYMTAB_DIRNAME (s) == NULL.
Computing srcpath only when SYMTAB_DIRNAME (s) is not NULL fixes this
error. Also change the condition for calling debuginfod_source_query
to include whether srcpath could be computed.

debuginfod is a lightweight web service that indexes ELF/DWARF debugging
resources by build-id and serves them over HTTP.
This patch enables GDB to query debuginfod servers for separate debug
files and source code when it is otherwise not able to find them.
GDB can be built with debuginfod using the --with-debuginfod configure
option.
This requires that libdebuginfod be installed and found at configure time.
debuginfod is packaged with elfutils, starting with version 0.178.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

The variable last_line_listed is never set when print_source_lines_base is
called in TUI mode, so the search always started from the last line printed
outside of TUI mode.

Hi,
This bug has been reported against Fedora GDB, but there's also an
upstream bug. The problem reported is that GDB segfaults when the
working directory is deleted. It's pretty use to reproduce it:
mkdir bla
cd bla
rmdir ../bla
gdb echo
Debugging the problem is a bit tricky, because, since the current
directory doesn't exist anymore, a corefile cannot be saved there.
After a few attempts, I came up with the following:
gdb -ex 'shell mkdir bla' -ex 'cd bla' -ex 'shell rmdir ../bla' -ex 'r echo' ./gdb/gdb
This assumes that you're inside a build directory which contains
./gdb/gdb, of course.
After investigating it, I found that the problem happens at
gdb_abspath, where we're dereferencing 'current_directory' without
checking if it's NULL:
...
(concat (current_directory,
IS_DIR_SEPARATOR (current_directory[strlen (current_directory) - 1])
? "" : SLASH_STRING,
...
So I fixed the problem with the patch below. The idea is that, if
'current_directory' is NULL, then the final string returned should be
just the "path".
After fixing the bug, I found a similar one reported against our
bugzilla: PR gdb/23613. The problem is the same, but the reproducer
is a bit different.
I really tried writing a testcase for this, but unfortunately it's
apparently not possible to start GDB inside a non-existent directory
with DejaGNU.
I regression tested this patch on the BuildBot, and no regressions
were found.

I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when
appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include
tilde.h.
Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h
instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the
latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former.
Tested by rebuilding.

This changes current_source_symtab and current_source_line to be
per-program-space. This ensures that switching inferiors will
preserve the current "list" location for that inferior, and also
ensures that the default expression evaluation context always comes
with the current inferior.
No test case, because the latter problem crops up with an existing
gdb.multi test case once this entire series has been applied.

select_source_symtab currently calls decode_line_with_current_source.
However, this function iterates over all program spaces, and so it is
possible that it will return a "main" from some other program space.
This patch changes select_source_symtab to simply use the symbol it
already found in the current program space.
